Design in the Desert at Taliesin West

Every winter, Scottsdale and the surrounding area plays host to many “snowbirds” – individuals and families escaping the cold winter weather for milder temperatures and daily sunshine. Famed architect Frank Lloyd Wright could be counted among this group. Taliesin West is a UNESCO World Heritage site and is on the National Historic Landmark register.

Office

Wright’s vision of designing buildings and structures that allow for harmony between humanity and its environment, or “organic architecture” as he called it, extends to his office, nestled in the foothills of the McDowell Mountains in Scottsdale. Built from real stone found in the area and set into a hillside, the indoor space has no full walls dividing rooms, the largest of the spaces was used for design while the smaller area served as an office.

Residence

Also built with natural stone from the surrounding area, Wright’s residence is open and organic just as his office is. Spaces flow into one another and there is plenty of natural light whether you’re in the kitchen, bath, living area, or den.

Studio

While Wright’s personal office is a building of its own, there’s also a studio where he taught many students and worked on thousands of projects and drawings. Today, it’s still a studio, but with modern computers and software available.
